Joel Oosterman serves as the Chief of Staff and Legislative Assistant to Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan - St. Paul. In this capacity, Joel has worked on a number of pieces of anti-human trafficking legislation, including Bill C-268, which would provide five year minimum sentences for child traffickers. Bill C-268 has passed the House of Commons and just recently was adopted by the Senate. Joel also holds an Honours BA in Criminology and Criminal Justice and a Minor in Political Science.

Worldwide, countless individuals are held and exploited against their will for the purposes of sexual slavery, forced labour and other forms of involuntary servitude. Canada is by no means immune to this brutal injustice on the individual's freedom, life and liberty.
