Mark Wegierski is a Toronto-based writer, social critic, and historical researcher. He has been published in Alberta Report, Books in Canada, the Calgary Herald, the Ottawa Citizen, and others. He has appeared in scholarly journals such as Review of Metaphysics, Telos, and Politeja (Cracow: Jagiellonian University). He has also appeared in Polish, British, and German popular publications, such as Najwyzszy Czas! (The time is now) and Salisbury Review. An article he wrote on Canada was reprinted in Annual Editions: World Politics, 1998-99 (Dushkin/McGraw-Hill, 1998).

Much of current-day Canadian politics is driven by certain visions of America as a “bigger, badder” society than the “kinder, gentler” Canada. Indeed, for much of current-day Canadian popular opinion, America is a virtual Mordor – “where the shadows lie”.
