The bitter enmity between Wildrose Conservatives and Progressive Conservatives in Alberta is perfectly understandable. Both sides blame the other for the shocking election of an NDP majority government on Orange Tuesday, May 5. Terrible things were said and done on both sides during the 2012 election campaign. Wildrose effectively destroyed two PC leaders, and the PCs stole a Wildrose leader, plus half their caucus. But both sides need to think hard about what’s at stake, writes Colin Craig, a conservative refugee from 16 years of NDP government in Manitoba who recently moved to Alberta. If small-c conservatives fail to overcome their differences, put the past behind them, and unite in a single party, he says, the NDP may get two terms to monkeywrench Alberta’s economy.
