James R. Coggins

James R. Coggins is a writer, editor and historian who grew up in Waterford, Ontario. He wrote his first novel in high school, though it remained unpublished. He earned a B.A. (English and History) and M.A. (History) from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., a Diploma in Christian Studies from Regent College in Vancouver, and a Ph.D. (History) from the University of Waterloo in Ontario. Coggins spent seven years in Winnipeg and now lives with his family in B.C.’s Lower Mainland. He has worked as a magazine editor (including 19 years at the Mennonite Brethren Herald), as a college lecturer, and as a freelance writer and editor. He has written everything from scholarly and encyclopedia articles to jokes in Reader’s Digest (the jokes paid better). His published books include his doctoral thesis, four John Smyth murder mysteries, and a novel on the 1995 Quebec separation referendum.
